NOTE: The early
settlers of Derry under Sir Henry Docwra were essentially English, but some
Scots were in the locality of Rathmelton and Raphoe who traded in the City.  No native Irish
were allowed  to live in the city after 1615  until after the
Restoration of Charles II in 1660 It is pertinent that the English settlers
were mainly Puritan which had an affinity (Calvinism) with the
Presbyterians. This contributed to the early harmony among the settlers such
that the population of Londonderry gradually became a mix of English and
Scots. Discord arose in 1633 with the arrival of the episcopalian Bishop
Bramhall, a violent and intolerant person; and the rule of Wentworth.
