JOHN BLACKADDER  [BLACKADER], son of John B. of Inzievar, cadet of the
family of Tulliallan; educated at Univ. of Glasgow, where his uncle, .lohn
Strang, D.D., was Principal; M.A. (1650);licen. probably by Presb. of
Glasgow; ord. 7th June 1653; deprived by the Acts of Parliament 11th June,
and Decreet of the Privy Council 1st Oct. 1002. He lived for a time at
Caitloch, Ingleston, and Bardennoch, all in Glencairn, and at other
places, and up to 1678 preached repeatedly at conventicles  in the
fields and in private houses. Numerous warrants were issued for his
arrest, but he contrived to escape imprisonment. He fled to Rotterdam in
1678, but was in Edinburgh the year following. On 5th April 1681, he was
seized and sent to the Bass Rock, where he was imprisoned for four years.
Broken in health, he was allowed his freedom, 3rd Dec. 1085, on giving a
bond of 5000 mcrks to confine himself to Edinburgh. Within a month he died
on the Bass, and was buried in the churchyard of North Berwick. He marr.
in 1640, Janet (died 9th Nov.1688, and was buried in Greyfriars,
Edinburgh, the following day), daugh. of Homer Haining, merchant,
Dumfries, and had issue William, physician to William III., born 1647,
died 1704; Adam, a merchant in Sweden and Edinburgh, born 1659; Robert,
student in Holland Thomas, merchant in NewEngland: John, lieut.-colonel of
the C’ameronian Regiment, deputy-governor of Stirling Castle, born 14th
Sept. 1064, died 31st Aug. 1729: Elizabeth (marr. 25th Oct. 1687, James
Young, writer, Edinburgh); another daugh.,died unmarr.
