Of Caldow, Balmaclellan, licen. by Presb. Of Down, Ireland, in 1673; at
the instance of Robert Moir, min. of Balmaclellan, he was imprisoned for
thirty-five months at Dumfries for nonconformity, but was liberated 3rd
May 1677; confined to Balmaclellan, and afterwards to Kirkcudbright and
Dumfries. He was declared fugitive 5th May 1684. In 1685 he was again
arrested, and along with many others imprisoned at Dunnottar Castle. A
petition by his wife brought about his release, on a bond of 5000 merks
being given. He returned to Balmaclellan; was called to this charge; ord.
(in Dumfries meeting-house) 14th Dec. 1687; member of Assembly, 1690,
1692, and first Moderator of Synod after the Revolution; died 25th
Feb. 1697. He marr. Grizel Cairns, who died 27th May 1702.
