Wolfe Tone. Founder member of the Society of United
Irishmen. b 20.6.1764 Stafford St, Dublin. Liaised with the
French and twice raised a force for the invasion of
Ireland – at Bantry Bay, December 1796 and Lough Swilly in
September 1798. Sentenced to death but died 19.11.1798 in
prison from self inflicted wound to neck. Buried
Bodenstown Co Kildare.
William Orr b 1766, Farranshane
Co. Antrim d 14.10.1797, hanged at Carrickfergus.
Convicted, by a drunken and coerced jury , of
administering the treasonable oath of the United Irishmen.

organisers of the uprising of 23 May 1798. Betrayed by
Captain Warnesford Armstrong. Both hanged and beheaded
Saturday 14 July 1798.
Robert
Emmet b 4.3.1778 in Dublin. Sought help from Bonaparte and
organised the rising of 23 July 1803. Hanged and
beheaded Kilmainham Jail, 20.9.1803
Thomas
Russell b 21.11.1767 Betsborough, Dunnahane, Kilshanick,
Co Cork. United Irishman Hanged 21.10.1803 (probably also
beheaded as was the practice for conviction for treason).
John
Mitchel b 3.11.1815, Camnish, near Dungiven Co Derry.
Publisher of the `United Irishman` newspaper. Transported
to Bermuda, then South Africa and ended up in a penal
colony in Hobart. Paroled but absconded to California
1853.
John Martin
(1848) b 8.9.1812,Loughorne, Newry Co. Down Activist and
contributor to the `United Irishman` publisher of the
`Irish Felon` newspaper. Transportation for 10 years,
arrived in Van Diemens Land November 1849. Paroled then
pardoned June 1856.
William
Smith O`Brien b 17.10.1803 Dromoland, Co Clare. MP for
Clare 1826. member of the Irish Confederation society,
organiser of the 1848 uprising. Exiled, transported to
Hobart Town Pardoned May 1856 d 16.6.1864 at Bangor, North
Wales buried Rathronan,Co Limerick.
Thomas
Francis Meagher b 1823 Waterford. Founder member of Irish
Confederation complicit in 1848 uprising. Transported to
Van Diemens Land 1849 escaped to America 1852. In July
1867 fell overboard from a steamer on the Missouri river
and drowned.
Kevin Izod
O`Doherty b June 1824 in Dublin. Co founder of the `Irish
Tribune` Convicted (on third trial) of treason – felony.
Transported to Hobart Town (with John Martin) Pardoned
1856 and having qualified as a doctor (MD) emigrated to
Australia.
Terence
Bellew M`Manus Liverpool Irishman and shipping agent.
Involvement in uprising. Tried 10.10.1848 at Clonmel for
treason. Transported to Van Diemens Land, escaped to
California in 1851 where he subsequently died. Buried
Glasnevin, Dublin 10.11.1861.

O`Mahony Involved in 1848 uprising, with Stephens, escaped
to Paris. Sought support abroad – responsible for USA. Co
founder of what was to become the Fenian Brotherhood.
James
Stephens Involved in 1848 uprising, escaped to Paris.
Sought support in Ireland. Co founder of the Fenian
Brotherhood. Founded the `Irish People` 1863. arrested but
escaped from Richmond Prison. Led Fenian attack on Fort
Erie on the Canadan side of the Niagara river 1.6.1866 and
defeated the Queens Own volunteers from Toronto. US
government interceded when Stephens determined that the
fight should continue in Ireland.

Clarke Luby. b ca 1825. Joint editor of the ` Irish
People`. Charged with treason – felony 27.11.1865 in
Dublin. Twenty years penal servitude. With O`Leary and
Kickham named as having executive authority of the Fenian
movement in the absence of Stephens ( planned trip ) to
America.

having executive authority of the Fenian movement in the
absence of Stephens ( planned trip ) to America. Sentenced
6.12.1865 Twenty years penal servitude.
Charles J
Kickham b 1825 Mullinahone, Co. Tipperary. Joint editor of
the `Irish People` named as having executive authority of
the Fenian movement in the absence of Stephens ( planned
trip ) to America. Tried 5.1.1866. 14 years penal
servitude.

Rossa. Member of the Phoenix Society in Cork,
paroled 1859. Business manager of the `Irish People`.
Sentenced 16.12.1865 Penal servitude for life

freeing of Colonel Thomas J Kelley ( aka Martin Williams)
and Captain Deasey ( aka John Whyte) and the murder
of Sergeant Brett. Hanged 23.11.1867 New Bailey Prison,

estate. Involved in the freeing of Colonel Thomas J Kelley
( aka Martin Williams) and Captain Deasey ( aka John Whyte)
and the murder of Sergeant Brett. Hanged 23.11.1867 New
Bailey Prison, Salford.

O`Brien ( aka Michael or William Gould) b Ballymacoda, Co
Cork. Emigrated to US; a soldier (lieutenant). Returned to
Cork and disappeared on the eve of the 5 .3.1867 uprising.
Involved in the freeing of Colonel Thomas J Kelley ( aka
Martin Williams) and Captain Deasey ( aka John Whyte) and
the murder of Sergeant Brett. Hanged 23.11.1867 New Bailey
Prison, Salford.
Edward
O`Meagher Condon (aka Shore) Irish American from Ohio.
Convicted and sentenced to death. But after Maquires
pardon his sentence was commuted, ostensibly because he was
an American citizen.
Edward
Maquire. Royal Marine private, arrested and tried with
O`Brien, Larkin, Allan and Sloane for the murder of
Sergeant Brett. Convicted but some 40 reporters sent a
memorial to the Home Secretary petitioning for full pardon
on grounds of mistaken identity. Granted a free pardon
21.11.1867.Created a dilemma for the Government as freeing
him meant conviction of others on the same evidence must
be unsound.

Charles Underwood O`Connell. Irish American soldier and
Fenian. Convicted 21.12.1865 at Cork to 10 years penal
servitude even though technically an American citizen.
Trial remarks by Judge that emigration did not remove
allegiance to the British Crown.

and Fenian. Attempted raid on Chester castle 11.2.1867
Convicted 6.5.1867 of treason, death sentence commuted to

Flood 15 years penal servitude. Cody to life. Duffy died

servitude.
